Silence Interrupted at Community Shield Game…

Virgil van Dijk couldn’t hide his disappointment with those Palace fans who didn’t uphold the silence before Sunday’s Community Shield game. Players from both Liverpool and Crystal Palace gathered to honor Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, who tragically died last month. But a handful of Palace fans decided to break the silence, causing more uproar than an elephant stampede at a knitting convention. This led referee Chris Kavanagh to cut the gesture short, and angry Liverpool fans responded with boos at the defiant noise-makers.

Van Dijk shared his brevity on the matter, disappointed by the action of those who sang through the moment meant for reflection and respect. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, however, believes there were no “bad intentions” behind the outbursts. Maybe the fans simply mistook the silence for a pop quiz on who could break it first. As if the drama wasn’t enough, Palace took home the Community Shield via penalties, casting an unsavory cloud over a game full of missed opportunities for Liverpool.
