Wirtz’s Epic Free-Kick Not Enough for Praise…
Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s $158 million man, silenced critics with a thrilling free-kick against Northern Ireland. Yet, the German press reacted as if he merely discovered how to toast bread without burning it – something we all know any toaster can achieve. Despite creating the most chances and drawing the most fouls in the match, he didn’t quite charm everyone back home, who expected him to summon dragons with every touch. Still, giving possession away only five times in 90 minutes is certainly impressive!
Even so, German tabloids compared Wirtz’s joyless performance to a goldfish forgetting how to swim after moving to a fancy aquarium—his free-kick skills notwithstanding. Despite a slightly better second half, highlighting some flashy dribbling that could make any ballet dancer jealous, reviews remained lukewarm. The German press has yet to be dazzled, leaving Wirtz in need of a little more wizardry against his future opponents. Perhaps he should consider juggling flaming footballs to capture the headlines he’s aiming for!
