When Reds’ Icon Nearly Blue Us Away!…
In a madcap twist of football fortunes, the legendary Liverpool striker Ian Rush sent Reds fans into a tizzy back on April Fools’ Day 1989. Rush, the man who could score from the halfway line blindfolded, was spotted on the cover of Shoot magazine in the infamous blue of Everton. Talk about a prank with the gravitational pull of an overhead kick! There he was, grinning like a Cheshire cat that had just found a bowl of cream after a Derby victory. Thank goodness it was just a jape because our scouser hearts just couldn’t take it!
After an Italian job at Juventus, where pasta and goals came one after the other, Rush returned to Anfield like a boomerang laden with goals. His dazzling feet and magic touch meant Liverpool fans could finally breathe easy, knowing their beloved number nine wasn’t going rogue. Though now John Aldridge had taken the mantle as the main red-hot shot, Rush’s April foolery made it seem for a moment like he aimed to redefine “playing for the other side.”
Fast forward to today, Old Man Rush (okay, he’s not that ancient, but go with it) is still yakking about his legendary tally of 346 clean goals. Mo Salah, the speed demon making defenders look like they’re running on bubblegum, is nipping at his heels like a determined pug. But Rushison Prime cheekily insists he’s ready to pass the torch — with a smirk, of course. Well, footy fans, who knows? Maybe Mo will shoot for the stars and catch that ever-elusive goose flying towards Rush’s record!
